It is planned to start at lunch at one of the historic hotels in the Rocks, undertake the walking tour, and then finish at another one of the hotels for dinner.
The tour will look at the history and geology of the Rocks, and the interaction of the two.
The Rocks was the first Sydney suburb and developed along the western shore of Sydney Cove, evolving from the 1788 convict camp. The suburb gains its name from the original influence of the underlying geology on its urban character. Many of the historic buildings and urban features of The Rocks seem to have been fitted into the sandstone immediately beneath them, or to rise out of it. Many historic structures in The Rocks are also built from sandstone that was sourced nearby, if not from the actual site. By European Australian standards, this is a very old place, being founded on 26 January 1788 (Australia Day).
The tour itself is free, however food and refreshments along the way will be at your own expense.
So as we don’t inconvenience other users of the Rocks and to make the group manageable, numbers will be limited to 30 and therefore registration is essential. There will also be a waitlist for those who initially miss out.
Registrations will open later this week – SMEDG and ASEG members will be advised by email in advance when the registration page will become live.
Details of the meeting times and maps of the walk will be provided prior to the tour once attendees are finalised.
